IHS iSuppli: Manufacturing issues caused iPad 2 shortfall

Manufacturing problems led to the shortfall of the iPad 2 during the first quarter, IHS iSuppli said yesterday, prompting the research firm to trim its forecast on Apple's tablet shipments for the year.

As iPad buyers have run into sold-out stock at Apple stores and long wait times ordering online, questions have arisen over why supplies of the new tablet failed to come close to demand.

Though it raised the specter of supply chain problems caused by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, IHS iSuppli doesn't see the disaster as contributing to the iPad shortfall. Following the earthquake, Apple quickly moved to ensure that it would have the necessary components to ship the iPad 2 last month. Instead, the firm pointed to manufacturing problems with specific components.

"IHS iSuppli sources indicate that Apple's production was stymied by manufacturing difficulties, which--combined with strong demand--led to short supplies of the popular tablet," noted the firm's report. "Those issues, according to the sources, included quality concerns with liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, production shortages of the new speaker, lamination issues with one of the touch suppliers, and end-unit production shortfalls."

Though Apple has since been able to bump up production of the new tablet, the company still won't be able to meet its targets for April. Beyond that, a shortage of supplies owing to the Japanese earthquake could hinder Apple's ability to ramp up production enough in the second half of the year to compensate for the initial shortfall, said the firm.

As a result, IHS iSuppli now expects Apple to ship 39.7 million units of both the original iPad and the iPad 2 in 2011, down 9 percent from its February forecast of 43.7 million.

Based on the firm's estimate of 15.1 million iPads shipped last year, it also now expects iPad shipments to rise 163.3 percent this year, down from its February estimate of 189.6 percent. However, the initial short supply is not expected to pose a problem in 2012. Looking at next year, IHS iSuppli has upped its estimate on iPad shipments to 62.2 million from 61.6 million previously.

Over the short term, Apple will continue to retain its dominance and edge over competing tablet makers on content, price, marketing, and momentum, the report said. Apple is forecast to lose its majority share of the tablet market late next year or early 2013, but it will still end 2012 with more than 50 percent of all tablets sold and hang on to a big lead beyond that.

"While Apple may lose its dominant share, there is no sign yet of a serious opponent to challenge Apple's place as the tablet market leader at least through 2015," IHS iSuppli analyst Rhoda Alexander said in the report.

Report: Apple Acknowledges iPad 2 Connection Issues

Soon after the Apple iPad 2 hit Verizon stores on March 11, users were reporting problems connecting to the Verizon 3G network.

The problem most often cited in a 7-page discussion at Apple's Support forum is that users can't turn on their tablet's 3G antenna without rebooting the device. For instance, if you've set your iPad 2 on Wi-Fi only or Airplane modes, you may not be able to re-activate 3G without restarting your tablet.

"If I have Wi-Fi on and then want to switch to 3G, then I can never connect and I only get the iPad icon on the upper left hand corner," a user wrote on March 30. "I have to reboot the Ipad with 3G on in order to connect. If I stay with just 3G, then I can turn it on and off without any problems."

Another user who had the same problem said Apple replaced his iPad 2 immediately but was experiencing the same problem with his replacement.

Until now, neither Apple nor Verizon have ever acknowledged the issue. But on Friday, Apple told All Things Digital (ATD) that it was looking into it.

"We are aware that a small number of iPad 2 customers have experienced connectivity issues with the Verizon 3G network and we are investigating it," Apple said.

A few AT&T iPad 2 users chimed in suggesting Verizon customers switch to AT&T.

"If any of you are within the 14 days, I would highly recommend just swapping out or returning your Verizon one and get an AT&T model," a user wrote. "I was lucky and got mine switched, everything thing now works like it's supposed to."

The Apple iPad 2 (Wi-fi + 3G) is offered by AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

Apple Admits iPad 2 3G Issues

Apple admitted on Friday it is looking into a Verizon 3G connectivity issue that some iPad 2 owners are reporting.

"We are aware that a small number of iPad 2 customers have experienced connectivity issues with the Verizon 3G network and we are investigating it," Apple says in a statement to All Things Digital.

The problem has popped up in the Apple support forums and apparently causes iPad 2 owners to restart their tablets to reconnect to 3G after turning it off.

Poster nixxon2000 started the conversation in Apple's forums on March 15 -- just four days after the device's release date -- saying, "When I try to connect to the cellular data it just says iPad or Searching in the top of the screen. ... If I do a hard reset I can get it to work."

As of Saturday, there were eight pages of discussion about the problem, which doesn't appear to effect AT&T models of the device.

If the issue is software-related, it could be short lived. AppleInsider points out a fix could be included in the soon-to-be released iOS 4.3.2. Boy Genius Report seems to think that update will arrive sometime in the next two weeks.
